Bireli's tone

Hi!
I just bought "Super guitar trio" dvd which features Bireli, Al di Meiola and Larry Coryell. Bireli has slightly better tone than Al but difference isn't so significant than I expected. Does anyone have any comments on that? Maybe benefits of rest stroke picking (tone-wise) would have been more obvious if concert had been totally unamplified?

I haven't watched that in a while...but I think when plays electric he still uses some rest stroke picking. But he's definitely got his wrist a lot lower and using a lot more free strokes and/or up strokes.

Does anybody know if Django used always rest strokes or did he also (as Birelli) depart from it f.e. when playing more bob influenced stuff?

I would say that Django pretty much always used reststroke picking.
