That's kind of funny; at Django in June 2007 there was a big argument about this, with the North American musicians insisting that "Only squares clap on beats 1 and 3!", and the French musicians equally insistent that "Only squares clap on beats 2 and 4!"
Paul Cezanne: "I could paint for a thousand years without stopping and I would still feel as though I knew nothing."
Edgar Degas: "Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter do good things.... To draw, you must close your eyes and sing."
Georges Braque: "In art there is only one thing that counts: the bit that can’t be explained."
Most people brought up on the western music tradition (except jazz) count the 1 strong 2 weak 3 semi strong 4 weak. It's the rhythmic nature of most western music.
The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed
Bones in a way you are right, but Using Dizzy's definition of jazz as the marriage of African rythm and European melody/harmony... Lots of gospel, blues, and some others get clumped into the same bag in my poor old brain. Most black music in America is not solely Western based but a merger of African and Western musical traditions.

What is hip, tell me tell me....
Ok, go into this church and clap on the 1 and 3 and tell me how that goes.
Sometimes you need to look to the roots to find the answer.
BTW, isn't that also kind of what la pompe is about?
Maybe this would work on 1 and 3 :-)
