Arps For Rest Strokers- Major

That other thread got me thinking about the idea of even numbers of strokes per string on descending lines to facilitate the rest stroke rule of down strokes on string changes. Very quickly it seemed that there were a lot of possibilities so I thought I would start a new thread talking only about major since it could get pretty busy if we included minor, dominant, etc all in the same thread.

As I tried to explore this idea it seems like the 'horizontal' patterns work pretty well. The 'vertical' patterns always seem to leave the major 3rd as a single note per string necessitating the use of a 'double down' stroke which I find hard to do at tempo since I'm not fast but there is always the option to add a second note on that string (4th, 2nd, etc) depending on what sound you like.

Plus, a lot of the discussion of the 'vertical' patterns of triads like the CAGED system seems like it is important to know just to know the fingerboard but I'm not sure how useful it is since the fingering usually seems awkward for the descending runs but take whatever I say with a grain of salt since I am not a lead player.

Thinking of it as string location of notes in the triad for orientation, here is an idea using root on the 6th, 4th, and 2nd string:

Ascending run in G major:

:..................5.......7.......9..........12
N---|---|---|---|---|---|-11|---|---|-12|---|---|---|---|
N---|---|---|---|---|---|--9|-10|---|---|---|---|---|---|
N---|---|---|--7|---|---|--8|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
N---|---|---|--5|--6|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
N---|--3|---|---|--4|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
N---|--1|--2|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Descending run in G major:

:..................5.......7.......9..........12
N---|---|---|---|---|---|--2|--1|---|---|---|---|---|---|
N---|---|---|---|---|---|--4|--3|---|---|---|---|---|---|
N---|---|---|--6|---|---|--5|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
N---|---|---|--8|--7|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
N---|-10|---|---|--9|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
N---|---|-11|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Here is the idea from the other thread with the root on the 5th, 3rd, and 1st string

    Ascending in D major:

    :..................5.......7.......9..........12
    N---|---|---|---|--8|---|---|---|--9|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--7|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|--5|--6|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|--3|---|---|--4|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|--1|--2|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

    Descending in D major:

    :..................5.......7.......9..........12
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--2|--1|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--4|---|---|--3|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|--6|--5|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|--8|---|---|--7|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|--9|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Now thinking about using the 3rd of the arp on the 6th, 4th and 2nd string

    Ascending in G major:

    :..................5.......7.......9..........12
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|--8|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|---|--6|---|---|---|--7|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--5|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|--3|---|---|---|--4|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|--2|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--1|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Descending in G major and using some color tones (6th) and a chromatic passing tone to have 4 notes on string 1:

    :..................5.......7.......9..........12
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|--3|--2|--1|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|---|--5|---|---|---|--4|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--7|---|--6|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|--9|---|---|---|--8|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|-11|---|-10|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|-12|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Our old pentatonic scale from the rock/blues is useful in this context since it has 2 notes per string. Using the 3rd on the 6th string again gives a Maj7 sound. Ascending and descending using the same pattern in G major:

    :..................5.......7.......9..........12
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|-11|---|---|-12|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--9|---|---|-10|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--7|---|--8|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--5|---|--6|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--3|---|--4|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|---|---|---|---|---|--1|---|---|--2|---|---|---|---|

Or how about a pentatonic pattern starting on the 6th tone located on the 6th string gives a major 6/9 sound in A major:

    :..................5.......7.......9..........12
    N---|-11|---|---|-12|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|--9|---|---|-10|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|--7|---|--8|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|--5|---|--6|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|--3|---|--4|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    N---|--1|---|---|--2|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
