I'll just say if I was a well heeled guy I'd be collecting Craig's guitars because I've never heard one that I didn't care about. Which happened with any other make without naming names and they were great instruments just sometimes a guitar doesn't pull you in.
His stuff will stand against anything out there.
Too bad we didn't together for a jam at DiJ.
I believe I played this one at DiJ and the oval hole which Michael (is it? The Ultrafox) bought. They sounded different from each other, kinda like just how you expect an oval hole to sound; focused, projecting-and d hole; orchestral and and open. That's how my above opinion about his not just good but great guitars got reaffirmed.
Yeah...we should have met in person. I honestly just forgot.
Craig had a few guitars there that were getting good feedback from many players. Sami had Craig's Corazon there, which I got to try the first night. It was one of the best new guitars I played this year. I played the other Derecho that was present and a few of the petite bouches. All were very good guitars.
It was the loudest guitar of DiJ 2015 without a doubt. And sounded wonderful too. I was telling Sami how I was dreaming of that guitar and he said if I were ever to get Craig to make me one it'll probably be better than his cause he's always looking to improve things.
I just bought the 2014 Derecho that was on Craig's website, the cedar-topper, East Indian rosewood version. I don't claim huge status as an expert in these guitars, but I've owned and played well over 100 modern guitars from Gitane, Dunn, Park, Hahl, Dell'Arte and other builders. And I've played a dozen or more vintage Gypsy jazz guitars. And all I can say is this Derecho sounds and feels more like a vintage instrument than any other new guitar I've played. Craig, as others far more experience than I will attest, is definitely the real deal. Definitely a builder of note worthy of consideration in comparison to any of the modern luthiers recreating these very special guitars.
