Stochelo's pick

Any of you guys know what thickness Stochelo uses in his Wegen big city? I have some of the 1.4mm but they feel pretty thin.

Yes, he uses 1.4mm. I use the Dunlop Gator 1.5 which Stochelo also likes! I find they have the same ease of playing. The Wegen is a little brighter, the Dunlop somewhat darker but not as dark sounding as the 2.0mm.

The Gators are 50 cts each. I have tried tons of picks but those Dunlops are the way to go: they sound great, they're easy to play fast with and they are dirt cheap. Can't beat that combo.

One gig Stochelo was like "damn, I forgot my Wegen. I really need it" kind of panicky almost. I had one left in my wallet ( I never use them anymore) and he was so relieved. See, that kinda thing doesnt happen with Dunlops, you can buy them everywhere and for the price of one Wegen you'll have 10 Dunlops!

Hey Hemert, any reason why you prefer the Dunlop gator to the tortoise 500 that Bireli, Nolan, et al. use?

I thought Bireli used the Delrin 1.5 (like Gonzalo Bergara and Adrien Moignard).

I like the Delrin fine (very similar to the Gator). They sound very similar to the Wegen, very bright. I prefer the somewhat darker tone of the Gator.

I have a bunch of 1.5mm Dunlop Delrins I use for mandolin. They don't have the punch of the Wegens for sure. But perhaps I should give them a chance. I really love the wegen M350 (Angelo Debarre's pick choice) I've been using - but perhaps based on Christiaan's sage adbise I will lay it down for a while to improve my "pick stuckness syndrome!"

Btw Stochelo uses 1,8mm big city picks. I believe the 1,4 picks are the bluegrass ones (used by Quinn Bachand and John Rijsdijk).

Last time I saw Gonzalo he was using the 2mm Gator. This was like a year ago though...

So may choices! I have a few dunlop gators, 2.0 and 1.5. But I still think the wegen M350 has warmth and harmonic richness that the others don't. Also it;s edges are very round which seems to make it easier to play with. Way easier than the Wegen GJ pick. maybe when I finally make a decision I'll sell all my other expensive picks cheap...

Before I ever learned that Stochelo used the Wegen Bigcity pick, I had found this to be my favorite, and that's all I use now. I have used all three sizes, but but prefer the 1.4. As a rhythm player, I get a great rake out of them with my high action (3.5mm) and no pick noise to speak of. My fingers are hard and slick, and their holes help to keep the pick in place.

I'm done looking for that "perfect" pick now. I chatted with Max Baggerman (rhythm player for Thoman Baggerman Trio) at Samois this summer and learned that he also uses the Wegen Bigcity. It's a great pick and perhaps you can end your perfect pick quest.

BTW: They come four in a pack, and I've been using them for a couple of years without losing any of them, although I keep a couple in my pocket just in case.
