Has anybody else noticed that there is a lot more gypsy jazz or type of tunes in TV commercials lately? There was one for a cappuccino machine l saw yesterday, now I saw one for Sears ,l remember an IHOP one.....
The most famous one was a Charmin commercial that used Django and Stephane's version of "After You've Gone". Some ad guy is probably a legend for this...
I asked that same thing in '11. Eventually Michael chimed in saying somebody asks that question every few years.
I haven't noticed a lot of it around recently but back then it seemed I could hear GJ everywhere.
I once was with my wife on a shopping tour and we were at some kitchenware shop and they were playing a well know GJ album, I forgot now who it was, I asked the guy at the store what's up with the choice of music and he said they liked the mood of it. He didn't even know what the term "Gypsy Jazz" was when I told him about it.
A customer of mine listens to some GJ just because it reminds him of his trip to Paris, same thing he's not familiar with the term or the music scene, just likes the atmosphere of it.
I guess advertisers are thinking something along those lines as well.

It's not a commercial, but I was delighted to hear Gypsy jazz on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". Anyone know who that was?
I hear it and used to hear it for medical, plans, hardware stores, grocery stores, home shows etc. Writing for these type of things was my introduction into Gypsy Jazz. Almost all major library companies carry a fair amount of GJ as an option to clients. When I wrote my first batch of pseudo GJ tunes they were geared specifically to not get in the way of dialogue over the top. I had no idea what I was doing GJ wise but knew enough to keep things simple as scoring is what I do. My collection did and does quite well, enough that Warner Bros asked me to do another a couple of yrs back, that's when I started taking GJ more seriously...that possibly could have screwed up the project because it is not about the music, it's about the subliminal comfortable bed the music is supposed to function as.
One of the top players here in St. Lou was hired by an agency to record "Django Style" music for an Infiniti car ad. They wanted it to sound vintage, so they recorded low tech. Gary Hunt and his Dupont can be heard throughout.
Not GJ but a funny story. Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan composed a rag/blues tune for the California lottery. They came up with this one which (as the story goes) was not used :-)
