Identifying guitar

Hi all,

I've just bought my first GJ guitar. I got it for $450 AUD (equivalent to 330 USD) inc. case, so I'm pretty chuffed. I felt starting with a cheapy second hand is the way to go until I can get some chops and know what I'm looking for in this style of guitar. So far I'm loving how it feels and how it sounds, but I can't compare it to any other similar guitars as Australia seems to have a dearth of these things, not to mention they are extra expensive here (Gitane DG-250 goes for $1250 online or $1850 in a shop!). I even bought it unplayed by me from far away due to living in the middle of the country.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have any identifying marks. The guy I bought it from also got it second hand so has no idea what it is either. There appears to be a shiny patch directly under the sound hole, so it may have had a sticker there with some details at some point in its life. Alas, no longer. I was hoping one of the experts here might have some luck identifying it if I put up some pictures.

Hi there. That's a Chinese made copy. It probably comes from the Aiersi factory. http://www.aiersiguitar.com/category/django-style-gypsy-guitar/ What gives it away are the truss rod cover, the abalone inlay, the fingerboard binding and the chunky heel. Don't take that as a negative, they can be really good value for money guitars, in fact I'm about to order one direct from the factory. They are sold in Europe through Gypsy Guitars in Germany. http://www.gypsyguitar.de/guitars/aiersi-guitars/

Great, I thought the heel might be a good clue. I've noticed all of the guitars I've seen online tend to have a flatter heel. Thanks for your help. This will get me going for a while. Once the Aussie dollar goes back up, I can think about purchasing something from Michael in a couple of years. His prices are still better than over here at the moment, even with shipping taken into account.

Looking at that site, I'd guess it is a cedar-topped GP-03TC. It looks pretty much identical.
I'm loving having one of these. All my practice has so far been on a Cort flat top, and it makes such a difference to play it on something like this instead. So much louder. My wife has to go the other end of the house to make phone calls now. I like the weight, too. About 1.6kg (3.5 lbs).

Hey @elrunto, if you join the Australian Gypsy Jazz page on Facebook, there are often people selling second hand guitars on there for Aussie dollars, plus you can get connected with the scenes around the country if you're travelling though. Glad you've found something you like though!

I confirm Aiersi, it is identical in all details to one I had a couple of years ago. Cedar top too. Good guitar for the price. Beware though there is someone in Pacific Pines area of Queensland who imports these with fake labels and regularly tries to pass them off as name guitars on ebay and Gumtree ads. And yes, Jon is right about the facebook group, you will have to put up with some hot air and in jokes (as with all facebook groups) but there is much wisdom to be found, good music and yes often good guitars for sale.
