Chairs, stools, whatever

Would love to hear what type of chairs and stools y'all use to perform in. I've gone from standing with a strap after 30+ years of gigging that way, to sitting in whatever the venue has: folding chairs, barstools of different heights, cafe chairs, dining room chairs, or using a foldup guitar stool that my other guitarist brings. That stool is cheaply made and overpriced. I know size and height are concerns but outside of that there will be differing opinions. I need portablity, support, and comfort!
Thanks!

I had one of these. They are kinda over priced, and someone stepped on one of the guitar stand legs and it broke off. But otherwise it was a pretty neat stool.

Chairs are something that I have thought a lot about, as someone who has three herniated discs in my back, and terrible posture when I play.
I bought a regular old folding chair and that has helped me a lot. Nothing fancy. The real trouble that I had was at home when I would practice for hours at a time. Living room furniture would leave me aching. So I bought a folding chair that I can stash out of the way behind the couch, and I take it with me when I play places. I don't always use it, but it's in the car in case there are no comfortable chairs where I am playing.

My favorite guitar chairs are Roc-n-Soc drum stools, the pneumatic lift types. They're great practice stools, but they're not practical for gigging because they weigh a lot and are squirrely to carry - like having another amp to schlep around. Also, they cost a fair bit. But I use them in the shop when doing detail work, and also when just playing in the shop or house. You can get them in round-top or tractor-saddle, and add backs if you want lumbar support. I like the saddle style with pneumatic lift and wide fixed base. I think it's called the lunar or luna. But YMMV. Next time you're in a music store, go find the best drum stool in the place - one with pneumatic infinitely adjustable height and a saddle-top, and try playing guitar on it - see if it floats your boat. The cushion quality is great and you can get the height perfect - or vary the height every so often to change your position and posture as your back gets sore.

You get one chance to enjoy this day, but if you're doing it right, that's enough.

The "folding padded stool" from Canadian Tire is just the thing. About $23 Canadian.I have a friend in New Brunswick who brings a few across the border when she visits Virginia.

Lots of folks using these. Up until recently they were 35 bucks ! This is a rebranded item with a slightly redesigned "guitar stand" . I would poke around and see if you can find the older model. For 70 bucks ??? Gad...
  • At home I use an office chair with arms removed. Height adjustable, seat slope and back support adjustable swivels and stable but moveable.

One day I will get around to adapting one of the old kitchen stools I have with a saddle and foot rest to take to gigs.

I'm about 6'-5" with the usual old-guy low back issues & had trouble finding the right chair for playing guitar, so built a stool. It's plywood with hardwood cleats that extend down the length of the stool and serve as the legs/feet of the stool. It started out a little too tall but kept shaving down the leg length until I was happy with it. Easy to carry around, and upside-down I can use it as a "bucket" to carry a music stand, guitar stand, etc.. The downside is I sit high enough that the guitar slides around on my leg, so I'm thinking about putting strap pegs on my guitar and playing with a strap again. Makes me wish I was a better carpenter, but I think my inept playing takes peoples minds off of my poor carpentry skills.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. @BlueSkies and @Al Watsky tried those and they're flimsy and guitar stand leg won't stay put, gets in the way. Too much $.
Folding chairs @Jim Gallaher often feel too low when not on a stage, which I'm seldom on! I need to be a little higher to be seen and to sing, in a more upright position.
@Bob Holo I thought drum thrones but they are, as you suggest, heavy and expensive.
    @Jazzaferri can't haul that around!
@Russig I reckon that's as good as a regular Wooden bar stool, which I'll likely carry around from now on.

I have thought about buying the original guitar chair, but it's like three hundred dollars but folds up and looks portable. Have bad back and work in construction that has everything to do with my playing and posture and tension in my body when I play, and when you do all your practice sitting I like to sit to perform also.

I used to use the drum stool. Its a bulky bit of gear.
This week it was back to the guitar stool with built in stand.
    That worked.
The guitar stand legs can be held in place with some velcro.
    Still for 75 bucks ?
Mine came for 36 dollars and at that price it was cool.
That being said. I've been using the thing for a couple of years and its still functioning .
Its even traveled internationally! (well just to Canada)
