If you go for a refret take a look at some of the other options out there besides the standard nickel/silver. I had Craig Bumgarner build my Corazon with EVO Gold fretwire which is much harder than nickel/silver but not as hard as stainless steel. It works & sounds great and I doubt I'll ever need a fret job in my lifetime even though I play 12-15 hrs per week on average. I have a couple of electric guitars with stainless frets and they're tough as hell although a little brighter in tone at least to my ears.
  • The harder the fret wire the faster the strings wear. One or other it bites.

Yes of course. The softer of the two wears out but I'll take string changes over fret jobs anytime. I only have to change strings every two months or so, not a big deal for me.

How much should one expect to pay for a fret redressing or a complete refretting?

If my memory is correct, I paid $90 for a fret dress and $250 for a re-fret.

  • I recently paid 350 CDN for a refret by the best guy in our area. Did a great job.
