Good question, Andrew. I'll have to ask my luthier next time I see him...
    None
Paul Cezanne: "I could paint for a thousand years without stopping and I would still feel as though I knew nothing."

Edgar Degas: "Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter do good things.... To draw, you must close your eyes and sing."

Georges Braque: "In art there is only one thing that counts: the bit that can’t be explained."
  • Nice job Will.....looks great.

OK, not sure if I'm beating a dead horse here, but I'm attaching a recent MP3 of my wonderful guitar from a February gig...

Don't know if anybody else out there faces with the frustration of playing lead with no rhythm guitar backing you, but it's a whole different feel!

I've gotten to the point where I can manage single note solos for slow and medium tempo tunes, but for faster ones I find that chord melody style works a lot better.

Plus, oh yeah, if you are a dedicated pompe-er you may not dig my Lang-Influenced rhythm style...

A great last note! How come you don't have a rhythm guitarist?

Thanks, Jojo. You asked a good question which deserves a good answer.

There are several reasons our group doesn't have a rhythm guitar...

    - due to our virtuoso clarinet/sax leader's unusual style, our trio is actually more of a twenties vaudeville jazz act than anything else. While we do play some jazz standards and Django tunes, our normal thing is more about obscure pop tunes from the 20's and 30's, harmony singing, etc.

    - on about half of our numbers I play the plectrum (CGBD) banjo

    - it's hard enough getting work for a trio, never mind a quartet!

    - when we do numbers that use the guitar, I actually am the rhythm guitarist and I enjoy attempting to play a kind Eddie Lang-ish style rhythm.

    - after playing together in this trio combination for about ten years, we are kind of locked in with each other's styles to the point where most outsiders just don't have the right feel to fit in.

    - if we could find another guitarist or pianist crazy enough to want to play all the obscure crazy stuff that our band plays, then we might consider adding another member... But for better or worse, that doesn't seem very likely to happen soon!

    Will

Will, I really like the sound of the guitar on the clip you posted.

After reading your explanation to Jojo I'm rather intrigued by your trio's rationale - sounds like a lot of fun. Any songlist available of your repertoire of obscure pop tunes from the 20's and 30's?
