  • @klaatu those are great looking amps; a little more than I wanna pay but if I had the money.

I like my 1965 Vox/ Jennings Music AC-50 with the 2x12 cabinet. It uses a pair of EL34 output tubes, four 12AU7s in the preamp.

Those building 5E3s on the cheap -- are you using a kit or sourcing the parts individually?

    Nobody?

Surely some of you are actually building these $250 5E3s and not just talking about it on the Internet. :)

You can source the parts yourself using numerous schematics on the web. I would guess that in NZ you will pay at least twice what I pay in the US.

Tube Depot frequently has kits on sale as do others. You can do a 5E3 in about 12 hours with common hand tools.
  • The full kit is actually kinda expensive. If you can build a cab, or find one on the cheap, I reckon it's cheaper.
  • Where does one find the kit? Cabs are easy for me.

Thanks! I was familiar with Weber but the others are new to me.

Hey Jehu, used to live in NZ (70's-90's). Had a little Concord Coquest amp in the early 70's, Made in Northcote. Deluxe style combo, controls on top. Grey fleck paint, which I sanded odd to reveal solid pine cab. Replaced the broken single 12 speaker with a Rola (I think) and it sounded fantastic. I think it had tremolo. . One of the best amps I've ever had. Wish I kept it. You could probably pick one up locally on the cheap, I used to see them occasionally in Harmony House in AKL. Some of the early Jensens are also worth checking out. Their Beatmaster (no kidding) Tele style guitars were also very cool.

    Swang on,

Hey Steve, thanks for the tip. I do see Concords pop up from time to time, but they're not exactly cheap... people must have wised (wisened?) up!

Anyway, I have a nice tube amp that I'm quite happy with, it's just that lately I have felt the urge to build my own Deluxe. So when people mentioned building one for under $250 (which I still haven't seen as possible), I had to investigate.
