running the Ischell direct through a PA?

Hi there,

Has anyone else issues running the Ischell system direct through a PA. Last night we tried to run mine that way and it created massive feedback and sound issues. Eventually we ran it through an amp and into the PA and that helped. Having already spent a lot on the Ischell, I really don't want to have to buy an amp, so any advice would be great.
maybe the LR Baggs DI box would help ?

The most important thing with the Ischell is the putty. If it's not absolutely air tight, feedback can be an issue. This includes air bubbles in the putty itself, not just the seal around the mic. Once airtight, you should have very little if any feedback problems.
A preamp never hurts, either. I have a Baggs Para DI, but I don't need it all the time.
  • Other guitarist in my band had some issues through amp. I think @thorjensen is right and it's more likely the putty and placement of the mic in it. He stopped using it because it became problematic.
I know how you feel about about amps, but it's so much easier ultimately.

Damn, that's too bad, Anthony. I always run mine directly through our band PA and have never experienced similar problems. Maybe you're too close to a monitor?

Anyway, I encourage you not to give up, because once you do have it EQ'd just perfectly then you can add a touch of reverb... not enough for the audience to even recognize that it's there, but just enough to fatten up the sound real nice.

Ditto on the putty, and placement is pretty important as well - it varies from guitar to guitar, and you have to find your own sweet spot.

We all used the Para DI anytime we were going through a PA. A sound guy once told us that it's better to fix EQ at the source than at the board. Most pro sound guys are very familiar with the Baggs and can help with the setup.

So don't keep us in suspense, Anthony! Did you get your feedback problems sorted out?

Just out of curiosity, have you got the Ischell with the little metal box pre-amp, or the one with the special cord that runs on phantom power?

I've got the one with the little metal box, and there are two miniature slider switches on the side of the box that I had to play with... don't know anything about the other one.

    *********

I did find that I could get more volume out of my Ischell using a second pre-amp (I used my Schatten DI box) but alas, that came at the expense of tonal quality.

It seemed that my Ischell picked up harmonic overtones over a wider spectrum than the DI box, and those 'extra' frequencies just disappeared when using the DI...?

I don't know if I'm describing that correctly, but I'm sure others here with more expertise who can chime in on this phenomenon.

Admittedly my experience may not be the same with more expensive DI boxes...

In any case, good luck, and I feel confident in saying that at the end of the day, you'll be happy that you bought the Ischell.

PS Oh yes, another tip, I keep my little metal preamp box up off the floor by plugging it right into the PA input with a little 2" two-way guitar jack.

I also use a foot volume pedal with mine because I double on banjo and I like to turn the volume right off the guitar when I'm not playing it, just to avoid any possible feedback problems.

    Hi there,

So last night I used it my Ischell with my new Para di box and ran it through the PA. IT definitely sounded a lot better.

I have a new slight mystery though - Does the Para DI provide Phantom power ? I had to run it through the little phantom power box that came with the Ischell (that should answer your question Will). I thought I could not bother using the little box, as I thought the Para DI would work alone, but it ended up needing the little box as well.

No, the Para DI does not provide phantom power to the attached device. It can run on 48V phantom power from the board but does not pass the phantom through.

  • True! I wasn't paying attention. I never use batteries and was thinking of the actual power.
