A Selmer D 500. Difference betweem a Selmer and Gitane.

Hi, all. I'm new to Gypsy Jazz guitars and am looking for one. I just saw a Selmer D with a Selmer Decal on head stock and tag in the body. I've seen a lot of Gitanes but the only Selmers I've seen are in the many $1000's of dollars. This is under $1000. Is it a real one that someone doesn't know they have? Could it be a phony decal? What's the difference between a Selmer and A Gitane? Confused. Thanks.

Well it could be a genuine Selmer, but to be honest I suspect that's unlikely. A genuine Selmer wouldn't have a decal on it. As for what's the difference between a Selmer and a Gitane...well Gitanes are all recently made in China and while they are great guitars they are not Selmers.
