Gypsy picking even notes

I've gotten fairly comfortable with gypsy picking over the last year, however one area of difficulty for me, oddly enough, is picking even notes, namely groupings of four, i.e. the pseudo chromatic scale or the famous Django- Mozart step up step down arpeggio lick.
Any advice?

Metronome. SLOW. Not at all easy, boy do I know
  • When I switched from alternate to down stroke I spent the first several months playing everything downstroke only. One of the most difficult things is to play 2 downstrokes in a row at speed smoothly
The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed
