New idea in pick design at Manouchepicks

bohemewarblerbohemewarbler St. Louis, MO✭✭✭✭ Jordan Wencek No.26, Altamira M01D-12 fret
For those of you who play with the rounded or side edge of a pick, I would like to recommend a new idea in pick design that Jokko Santing of Manouchepicks just created called “the circle.”

First of all, it is perfectly round like a circle. This allows for the sense that, at least psychologically if not physically, the pick is staying in position while playing because either while you're playing or when you're finished with a tune, you don’t end up at the pointed end or the side or the opposite side you started with. With a circular pick, you always end up with where you started. Second, the pick’s material feels comfortable and produces no unwanted clicking noise against the stings. Third, the edge is smoothly beveled on both sides of the pick to allow for quick licks, flourishes and tremolos. Fourth, the holes in the center provide extra gripping power to hold the pick in place.

The pick Jokko made for me has a width of 24 mm. and a depth of 2.2 mm. He thinks his standard width will be 25 mm., and the depth would be accustomed to what the player desires. Of course, Jokko can custom the width as well.

“The circle” as he is calling it, might not be on his webpage yet, but you can order it (€15) through his website: manouchepicks.com. His shipping charges are confusing on his website. If you order one or two picks, shipping to U.S. is €2.50.

I wouldn’t normally recommend any particular string or guitar, etc, in this way because I know we all have differences and preferences in what we desire. But I’m not aware of any pick that is shaped like this and has these features, so I’m putting it out here on this forum. I no longer have to get out my sandpaper and roughly try to shape a pick to fit my needs. In all honesty this pick is, without a doubt, the only pick I foresee myself using for the rest of my Gypsy Jazz playing years!

Check out the photo (Yes, it looks like a button, but Wegen already has a pick called "the button" even though it doesn't look much like a button, and it's not circular).

John Pearse has been making Django inspired "button" pick, 1.55mm.
It is not as nice as the one Jokko is making I'm sure.
I like the picks Jokko made for me a lot.
Still kinda wishing to order his "Django" pick...eventually I won't be able to resist.

Djangobooks sells some button style picks, the V-Pick Gypsy, 1.5mm -1″ diameter, round, symmetrical @ $5 each. From the description: "this thing has some FAST action! It flies from one string to another. Also makes a fantastic rhythm pick."
  • I recall reading that Django used a button more than once
