I'm a bassplayer, who like 1 year ago fell in love with gypsy jazz. I know that bass is not a leading instrument in the genre, but can you name any prominent bassplayers in the gypsy jazz for me? Who to listen to?
Im not a bass player, so my opinion is probably less informed than some, but here are some players I like:
Nonnie Rosenberg (Rosenberg Trio)
Oriol González (Biel Ballester Trio)
Diego Imbert (Gipsy Project)
Arnoud Vandenberg (Robin Nolan Trio)
I wonder if others and particularly bass players have developed an ear for jazz bass. I often couldn't tell what the bass is playing even if I paid attention to it. Normally I don't and I feel kind of guilty about it. I sometimes listen to GJ playalongs without actually playing along just because that's a rare occasion when I can hear the bass part clearly.
I don't know about prominent, but I've also been very impressed by Ghali Hadefi (on rhythm guitar as well as on bass). Ghali's Blues with Rocky Gresset on Youtube isn't typical GJ, but it's one of those performances that remind you why you're spending all that time learning to play. I'm also a big fan of Jérémie Arranger's little bass solo at the end of Artillerie Lourde on Clasico with Bergara and Moignard.
P.S. Wow, seriously, 30 likes? I would be remiss not to include the link:
