I think the original Selmers the braces extend all the way to the sides so the "lining" is notched. I don't do mine that way since i find it kind of tedious to notch the linings to fit the brace ends just right and I prefer the structural joint of the top to the sides thru the lining to not be interrupted. I don't think it makes much difference either way as far as tone goes.
Sorry not a great picture but the pliage is just to the right of the bridge. Notice how the line of the top changes. If this picture doesn't help I'll try to get a better one. If you look at the angle of the top just to the left of the bridge it angles up a bit in the picture but to the right of the bridge it angles a bit down relative to the part to the left of the bridge. As I recall the angle I was shooting for was about 7 degrees but I'd have to check my fixture/calcs to verify that.
Cool. Yes, thanks to your convenient BYO label on build posts I've been able to absorb a lot more information and knowledge about the 'pliage'! I think I've got a relatively decent understanding of it now - though, the acid test will be when the top goes (or doesn't go..!) on. :D
Here are the radii that I used on my last build. But be careful as YMMV. These radii assume a short scale, 14 fret, D hole with a pliage (not domed) top. I think it was about a 6-7 degree pliage. I did the calcs based on "standard" Selmer body dimensions assuming that the top pulls down to the straight top edge of the sides. These dimensions worked out exactly as calculated and assume a slight taper shim between the fingerboard and the top (like .040"?? tapering to maybe like .010" but I can't remember).
brace 1- 8'7.1"
brace 2- 4'7.9"
brace 3- 5'10.7"
brace 4- 6'5.7"
brace 5- 11'9.4"
For my next build I am planning to modify brace 1 to (hopefully) eliminate the fussy little taper shim so I'm going to try a radius of:
brace 1- 5'5"
Again, don't just use these verbatim. They depend on your geometry. I'm only posting them for reference. Interested to hear what others use.
Also note that since it is a short scale 14 fret there is kind of a big span between the bridge and the tailblock so hence I chose a 5 brace setup.
