Here Bill, this is what I meant more or less. I actually wanted to make a video that I can post because I think it's a pretty interesting topic for many. But I was short on time and camera work is pretty terrible plus I don't even know if it would make sense for someone outside of this conversation.
Hope you don't mind Paul, there are more shots of my right hand in the interest of topic :)
Terrific, Buco - now I get it, having seen the example from 2.35 - 2.55.
So now I have the satisfaction of knowing I can already employ those Aurelien Buly licks I have been practising for so long in a realistic tempo version of Minor Swing.
I think even Django would take the same "lick" but would alter the time, making it completely new. Maybe instead of all triplets, he might make it eighths and just shorten. I learned a lick that was a little too hard for me to do at full tempo, so I sort of clipped it in half. I could play the beginning as triplets but then end on quarter notes, back to a few triplets to quarter notes. It gave it a new feel, but it can be cool. I'm currently working on Jon Delaney's solo version of Chez Jacquet that @geese_com put up and there is a neat part where he goes from triplets to quarter notes (I know it is in 3/4...are they still quarter notes?). That tempo shift actually sounds pretty cool in that part. Changes from what the ear expects, making it almost seem poly rhythmic.
Thanks for the vid, Buco. You really illustrated how we can still adopt these licks into our playing if we can't play the full tempo, full lick version!
I was asked what note values I play in these examples. I'm not even sure myself, I just go by sound I have in my head. I think first examples is 1/8 notes and in the second example I play 1/2 note triples (which would make sense 'cause it's just half of the original Aurelien's version which is I think 1/4 note triplets). Someone please correct if you know I'm wrong about this...
Haha yeah Buco I need to figure out what you are doing in that vid. Thanks.
BTW I've never thought about it but I checked and I think I drag the end of my pinky no matter what string I'm playing on. Maybe that's part of my problem :-)
