If you want to hear some great swing by four masters, check out "S'Wonderful - Four Giants of Swing." It features Joe Venuti, Jethro Burns, Curly Chalker, and Eldon Shamblin. All were quite elderly when the recording was made, but they had not lost their touch by any means.

The CD is not gypsy jazz, strictly speaking, but then again, neither is "Sweet and Lowdown." And Michael sells CDs by Joe Venuti and others which are not of the genre, either.

Everyone knows who Joe Venuti was. Jethro Burns was best known as half of the country comedy duo Homer and Jethro, but he was also one hell of a jazz mandolin player. Curly Chalker was a top-notch pedal steel player, and Eldon Shamblin played guitar with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys for many years.

Michael, perhaps you would want to consider offering this?

    What label is this on?

Are the playing together? Or is it a compilation of individual performances?

    Michael,

It's on Flying Fish #FF70035. Yes, they are playing together, along with piano, bass, and drums. The original LP was released in 1977, the CD in 1992. All standards - Take the A Train, C Jam Blues, S'Wonderful, Lady Be Good, etc.

In a similar vein is the 2004 release on Acoustic Disc "Back to Back" featuring Tiny Moore (mandolin w/ Bob Wills), Jethro Burns, Eldon Shablin, Ray Brown (bass), Shelly Manne (drums) where they play a bunch of swing tunes including Swing '39.
