Wonky observation -- Bob really understands the interplay between the modes of vibration of the assembled guitar -- the top plate, the back plate, and the various air modes of the cavity, including the lowest "breathing" mode. And I think he knows how to get to the desired assembled modes, from tuning the "free plate"modes of the unassembled plates.
This knowledge is related to luthier Al Carruth's groundbreaking application, to guitars, of violin luthier Carleen Hutchins' work on violin modes, which in turn stemmed from the earlier "Chladni patterns" of vibrating plates . . . .
