I don't listen to a whole lot of Latin jazz, but does anyone have familiarity with Bernie Williams? He was a centerfielder for the Yankees in the 90s, but I hear he's also quite talented at jazz guitar. Played on Paul McCartney's label if I recall. Received some good buzz as something professional, not just a typical vanity project. But, I've never had a chance to listen to his music.

But, we still do not know whether the original question was about 'non-gypsy' jazz artists, meaning jazz musicians who are not gypsies, or 'non-gypsy jazz' artists meaning artists of any style except gypsy jazz.

Answer it whichever way you prefer to read I guess.

+1 for Debussy. Add in the 19th century romantics (nationalist romantics- though I do not subscribe to nationalism as a creed - the Russians of course, but the "national revival" composers like Smetana - "Z českých luhů a hájů," "From Bohemian Woods and Fields" is such a beautifully haunting piece), Beethoven and Mozart, especially Mozart's later work.

Crosby, Stills and Nash. My brother's gf at the time was Jacques Cousteau's niece or something like that, so we got to go, first couple rows, CSN concert to benefit Cousteau's World Environment Day. I was young, but aside from being blown away by the trio, David Lindley guesting on electric violin - seared into memory: "Right. Turn the amplifier up. I want to burn the enamel off their teeth."

I have to admit Carminho is a new one on me, but wow, Tom Waits she aint !

Although I made very little progress with learning the language I have always liked listening to Portuguese music.

When I lived in UK I used to go to Portugal a lot and often sought out the Fado bars around Alfama, or my favourite restaurant down south in Porches, and found many great singers and also got hooked on the Guitarra Portuguesa but that is another story for another thread.

He is one my faves after I found him when he was backing Mariza. Worth looking up on Youtube as a solo artist too.
