The scan Willie posted with the picture of Leo Marjane shows it as Seul Ce Soir presumably from 1941, and that looks like a sheet music cover. So it was spelled both ways from the beginning?

Yup. Looks like it is from this songbook dated ~1942. This is a French publisher, too. Strange.
