Lang the Father, Django the Son, and Oscar the Holy Ghost
The contemporary players..
Howard Alden, Frank Vignola, Amos Garrett
Edgar Degas: "Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter do good things.... To draw, you must close your eyes and sing."
Georges Braque: "In art there is only one thing that counts: the bit that can’t be explained."
Gilad Hekselman
John Abercrombie
Jonathan Kreisberg
I'm surprised no one mentioned:

Derek Smalls
and of course, Emmet Ray
Wow. That's a tough one. Out of the more modern guys I'll go Julian Lage ( probably the best pure improviser I've ever seen live, on any instrument. Antoine Boyer, Kurt rosenwinkel, Mike Moreno. My favorites earlier in life used to be Doug Raney, Bruce Forman. A very special shout-out to Holdsworth. Which yet is decades away from being duplicated.
Wes, Joe and Kenny. In that order. In fact, you can throw Gypsy jazz guitarists, rock guitarists and even classical guitarists in the mix and those three would still be my favorites.Bireli and Jimi would be 4 and 5.
Julian Lage
Andy Brown
Joe Pass
Freddie Green
Dave Stryker
Marty Grosz
Wes Montgomery (by far)
George Benson
third place alternates between Barney Kessel, Pat Martino, Bireli, Joe Pass and Grant Green
Angelo Debarre, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass
