I am not in any way an expert on Jazz horn players but I once read something in a B.B.King interview that has stuck with me and probably been more of an influence on how I 'think' guitar than anything.

He said he sings a line, riff, phrase or whatever in his head as he plays, and that automatically meant he left gaps for breathing, so he recommended when soloing on guitar to think like a horn player and take a 'breath'. I started listening to horn players in a different way and once I took up B.B's suggestion it has stuck with me ever since. I always found something very annoying about how Eric Clapton (and many others) play that non-stop 'widdly-widdly' filling out five minute solos with a string of repeated high-speed licks that say nothing, and yet the late great Peter Green could say so much more with three notes and a space.

B.B. was right, and even he said Green " was the only one that gave me the cold sweats".

Following B.B's advice I got to listening to horn players as a way to play guitar and that led me to liking......

Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon and especially Ben Webster

Interesting that Coltrane and Parker aren’t ace-ing this thread.

I would go with Coltrane, Gordon and - for his love of Django - a special mention for James Carter.
