Florida Gypsy Jazz?

Hi gang,

Caleb, this should be right up your alley, or maybe Larry's...a guy I know here is moving to Florida (St. Petersburg) in mid-August, and wants to know if there are any like minded souls in the area; I told him I'd put the word out. He plays a lot more early swing than gypsy jazz per se, but he's interested in learning more (I'm going to lose a sometime student!).

I think Caleb's actually a ways away, but I thought you might know some folks. By the way, I just met a guy who was at FSU not that long ago: Joseph Lawrence Giffin (he goes by Lawrence); any chance you know him?

Best,
Jack.

Hey Jack, Actually yeah man St. Pete is a good ways away. So yeah that would definatly be up Larry's alley. I am not sure if I know the guy you know FSU is really big. What did he study? I am much better with faces than names sometimes. If they don't know me I doubt I know them unfortunately. I have ashamedly been at FSU since the summer of 2000, and have yet to earn a bachelors degree ( I was in the philosophy program from 2000-2003 then the Jazz program.)So I have met a lot of people.( I should be out of school this spring then I am moving somewhere where there is some Gypsy Jazz. Hopefully with teachers.) Thanks for thinking of us outlanders down here though. :D

Caleb, you should come up here, man! It's pretty cheap, and not too far from Stephane if you're interested in lessons.

I'll have to check what Lawrence was up to; he was either in the philosophy or Lit Crit area, but I think he was there around 2000/01. It's a small world-it turns out he also taught creative writing at the school I went to in Connecticut, though long after I'd left...at least we were able to bond over how awful the students were.

    Best,
    Jack.

Sure man. i just saw the pics of your apartment in the other thread it looks hip. You need a roomate? Just kidding :D . I like the idea of New England ( I will have to stop myself from singing the Billy Bragg tune though.) and you guys have Django in June. Seriously though I am not sure where. I am going but I do know it will be far from Tallahassee I grew up here and went to school here and it is time for me to move on. If your friend was in the philosophy dept I don't remember him, but in 2000/01 I was a very lowly undergraduate. So maybe like you said small world.

    Hey Jack,

There are definitely some like minded folk here in St. Pete. And Gainsville, too. (which is not far away) If he loves swing music also, there is a HUGE contingent of traditional and swing musicians here and especially Sarasota, FL.

I would happily and gladly welcome anyone who was into Django and GJ to St. Pete! Please tell him to contact me either through my websites or through a PM to this forum. Thanks, Jack.

Y'all might want to get in touch with Dennis Devine or Harry Coleman who are in that neck of the woods. You can find out more about these folks here: http://gadjo.net/about.html

IF anybody wants to meet up and play Hot Swing in SE Florida, I am often in the Palm Beach area and play pompe (rhythm), so give me a PM.

    Thanks! ... J-D.
