Jimmy Bruno On Comping
Happy Holidays!
I was surfing around on Jimmy Bruno's website. I really liked this point he makes and I think a lot of (especially beginning) rhythm players will do well to listen to what he has to say. Less is more. I like the white chalk on a white board analogy. He's talking about comping mostly 3rds and 7ths plus maybe a root,5th or 3rd in the bass. Freddie Green style chords.
Plus I like the sound of the sparse 3rd/7th in the low register where it kind of thumps you in the chest while still staying out of the soloists way.

He knows of what he speaks. His comping is interesting and sophisticated without supplanting soloists.
His solos can be cerebral, yet he seems to be very connected to whoever is comping for him. His recent
work with Frank Vignola on Frank Vignola's Guitar Night at Bird Land, NY is a student's dream.
