Hi all,
I am in awe of the expertise among the folks who frequent this site.
So I’m going to tell you a tragic tale, in return for which I’m hoping you’ll be moved enough to offer some free advice.

So it all began a few years ago when some idiot that looks a lot like yours truly, okay yes it was me, started sleeping in the spare room with a cute little blonde model you guys would really dig.
She’s part Italian and part French and believe me all my friends would just love to get their hands on her, but she’s way out of their league.
Her real name is “Castellucia” but I call her “Lucia” for short. That’s in honor of a great BBC series from the eighties called “Mapp and Lucia”, based upon the books by EF Benson, check it out.
A hilarious girlfight set in the 1930’s in England. Like Wodehouse only maybe better.
Anyway, I digress.
And I’m all too aware it is all due to my deep shame.
My wife never suspected a thing when I moved into the spare room when snoring issues provoked a nightly separation.
So my secret affair with Lucia was all going along wonderfully, until the night that silly silly miserable me assaulted that beauty for no reason.
And broke her heart,. Plus one of her knobs.
Because, shamefully, a few nights ago I kicked her right out of bed in the middle of the night.
(But what could I do? I dreamed that my wife was about to walk in.)
And I kicked her hard, right off the bed.
Lucia let out a scream of anguish and betrayal that haunts me to this day.
I can still hear it several days later. I hope someday I can forget it, but who knows, that time may never come.
Well anyway I guess the good news is that I didn’t break her neck, or harm that perfect body of hers.
But even so,Lucia has now turned her face to the wall so I can’t see her crying.
Silently reproaching me because for the first time in her life, she can no longer sing in tune..
She is very upset with me. And I totally deserve it, I know.
Anyway, here’s what her knobs used to look like…
Now I have already gone to Father Castellucia’s website and have been informed that they are Schaller HGO1.
So, that’s my sad tale, my brilliant friends, I hope if you have read this far perhaps it has amused you enough to help me with a few questions…
- Can I get away with just replacing the one busted knob? Because the metal hardware seems pretty much intact.
- If so, what kind/size of Schaller peg would match Lucia’s?
- Or would anyone perhaps advise replacing the whole HGO1 unit instead?

If the shaft is bent you’ll almost certainly have to replace the entire set of tuners. A broken button can be replaced, but I’ve never seen just a shaft replaced.

but I can report that a recent tribute to E F Benson and to the Mapp and Lucia series was presided over by Camilla, queen of England, who is a big fan apparently.

And I don’t mean the massage-table variety.
The guitar variety!
My local luthier was able to glue the three pieces of the broken tuner button back together again and I watched in amazement as he sprayed some mysterious substance on it which made the glue dry instantly… who knew such a thing was even possible?
Then I watched as he reinstalled it.
And now it works perfectly. You can’t even tell it was broken.
His price for doing this? Zero.
Wow.
He’s been similarly generous in the past so I’m gonna go to the bank and take out fifty bucks to give him.
But I think I’m going to take his advice and buy an extra button from Schaller for future reference, just in case…

PS And Lucia even seems to have forgiven me, because she allowed me to stroke her gently while she sang to me in her lovely voice, just like she used to do….

The mysterious substance may well have been water - it activates superglue. Great job!
So glad you're back in her good books.

Some (cyano)acrylate adhesives recommend an accelerator. I never understood why to put that on first. I couldn't see it, like it had evaporated...so I said to a co-worker, is it just a cleaner? 'No'.
It seems to work when applied afterward. "You're doing it wrong".
Moisture (H2O) does activate or cure some adhesives like Gorilla & either acrylic or urethane circuit board conformal coating (or both... don't remember).
But the accelerator for some Henkel/Loctite glues is not water.

After reading all the extremely flammable solvents in it, I still think it...well, can't argue with chemists. There are glues that don't stick to certain plastics due to some surface property. Maybe it optimizes the surface in some way other than cleaning.
