I bought one of his latest videos and found it pretty much unlistenable. It’s the first time I’ve heard a bright non GJ guitar being played over standard GJ backing tracks and found that it pretty much obliterated what was going on in the background. The sound I found quite jarring.
Anybody else come to the same conclusion?
I heard him play on gut string which was delightful. I was really surprised how an ordinary steel string acoustic could take away from the music compared to a Selmer etc

Just for clarity it was Vol 5
That's been his guitar of choice lately it seems. He played a whole show with it here
I'm listening on the phone but playing it with the band, if I closed my eyes I'd be hard pressed to recognize a flattop sound coming from it.
Thanks for that.
I think they haven’t got the mix right on the tuition vid. I can see what you’re saying, the live video has him placed fairly evenly within the context of the other players. There are some frequencies from his guitar that have been softened, the tuition vid has some mids being quite harsh and his chord work blots out everything.
Will enjoy the live video. I love his playing so it was a disappointment to have a barrier to learning some of his stuff
Yes, he's phenomenally good. All around amazing musician. I like his sort of holistic approach to learning music.

I was at that live show and the sound in the hall was fine - similar to that captured in the video.
maybe a little more sparkly on the high end then a Gypsy guitar which I think has a kind of chaotic high end. Definitely a more modern sound. Reminds of Birelli who I think SG really loves.
I think SG is up with Birelli in being a sort of pure improviser. I think those two guys are as good as any improvisers in the world.
This video is great, thanks for sharing it.
My favorite SG is the live at the Cucumbar 4 tracks. Perfect playing.
He once said at DiJ that he doesn't like how most GJ guitars sound. That's why, I guess, he was playing that nylon string one for a long time. I'd think, for him, it shouldn't be too hard to find a Selmer style one he really likes. I believe that Josh Greenberg - Larkspur Guitars - built a guitar for him.
Am currently listening to the Quecumbar recording. Hungaria is pretty wild. It’s 2010 and he’s pulling out all the stops
