Hi all
Im after any thoughts, help, opinions etc on the guitar i got hold of to restore. Its had the old finish rough sanded off, broken plastic binding glued back on, neck heel half replaced etc. The restoration will be top down.
What i think i have is a Joseph Dimauro the elder hearhole, 1950's 12fret to the neck. Its spruce top flat, mahogany neck and headstock, rose wood fretboard, solid birdseye maple sides, laminate mahogany/maple/mahogany back. Back has a nice deep curve to it but no bracing. Top is three ladder braces, one above the soundhole two below.
Im struggling to find this soundhole type on any hearthole on the internet. Im sure ive seen one before but cant find anything. Reminiscent of the Roget Chaput roundhole mod to his Selmer. Any thoughts, is it a version for a retailer?
A problem i have is this legit? My instinct is yes....but. the rosette however looks like its been done by an 8 year old. Plus the soundhole is off centre to the body. 1.5cm to the right. Its centred on the top plates join but the whole plot is not centred on the body. Once seen cannot be unseen. Do i retop? What do you all think. A Sonora version??

I saw that on Ebay in France - https://www.ebay.fr/itm/296694252820?_skw=manouche&itmmeta=01JBAA0YPBSM6JTVKYCMD77VVZ&hash=item45145b0514:g:rZMAAOSwyedm5vre&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAAwHoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKlErOUqkJJZRFWHlC9fFuU3e0sD5uR5wcgfYxcY6mx8%2FQ5031ZJ4tKEICqltYA79qzhXeR0YbotaIhPkSXJSBEJHYnYOcTyBebSUiq2cTcu%2BkQpbw%2FUiECtLgKLOtyj3XzHhTcqECKFbo99UL0iufNHT6Mc%2BnYuUu%2FuJB4GCBvG7kcOLyBprHN8GfxbjePiMWEZUPjlJDyFqcMIA8JpAJDCD4BnXbFubcLm6bQoSrZpoQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR6Trg8raZA
Looks good, but needs some work. Why have you put the tailpiece where it is? Surely it should be in line or am I missing something? Have fun restoring it! I love the idea of saving old instruments.
EDIT: ah yes, I can see now when I zoom in, the bad inlay around the soundhole. Di Mauros can be quite crude, but not this bad surely! My guess is that it's had the top replaced, or the neck reset badly (or both!). I don't know what I'd do. Sell it on again?!
The tailpiece is centred on the lower bouts and lines up with the centred neck but looks odd as the soundhole is off centre. But if i dont retop it i will play around with the location of the tailpiece and the neck position to get the strings a bit more over the soundhole. Might still look odd though.
Love a restoration challenge!
