Rina Ketty
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rina Ketty (* 1911 in Turin; † 16 December 1996 in Cannes; actual name Rina Piccheto) was a french Chanson-singer.

Life
Rina Ketty went to Paris in the 30s. In 1938 and 1939, she made her breakthrough with songs like Sombreros et mantilles and J'attendrai. Despite the popularity of these Chansons during World War 2, she was not able to stay in the spotlights after 1945. In 1954 she moved to Canada and in 1965 she returned to France but was unable to revive her pre-war success. In 1991 the French minister of culture Jack Lang awarded her the medal Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Her husband Jo Harman died in 1994.
Later, her songs were re-interpreted e.g. by Dalida. The song J'attendrai gained some renewed interest in 1981 as part of the soundtrack of the movie Das Boot and in 2006 for its use in a tv commercial from the french union of employers MEDEF.

    Other infos from François:

Rina Ketty, whose real name was Rina Piccheto, was born in Torino in 1911. She came to Paris to meet her aunts and discovered Montmartre. She sang in the 'Lapin Agile' cabaret.
Her meeting Jean Vaissade is a turn in her professional life and private life (she will marry him in 1938).
Vaissade is a talentful accordionist and will compose for her quite a few hits, like 'Rien que mon coeur' with which she will win the Award of Académie Charles Cros. Apart from the compositions of her husband (who occasionnally works with another star of the accordion Fredo Gardoni), Rita records some covers of italian tunes, like 'Reviens Puccina bella' a tango by Carlo Andréa Bixio.
Louis Potérat makes an adaptation of an italian hit Dino Olivieri : 'Tornerai' which becomes 'J'attendrai'. When the war starts it will become the hymn of the parted lovers.
Rina Ketty appears on the important Parisian scenes like l'Européen (1938), Bobino (1939), l'ABC.
In may 1940, Rina Ketty divorces [she had been reportedly untrue to her husband] from Jean Vaissade who has been wounded at war in Belgium .
She will become more discrete during the occupation (as Italy and France were in war).
