Hello everyone,

I was recently digging in my recordingarchive and found some videos I took almost four years ago of a concert of my grandfather Koen De Cauter with Fapy Lafertin and Rony Verbiest in my dad's café; Bar Lume. That year the Gentse Feesten; an annual city-festival in Ghent got cancelled due to covid-19 but my dad managed to organise some concerts anyway, including this one.

Sadly, our dear friend and amazing musician Rony Verbiest passed away last year after battling cancer for a long time. He often played with my grandfather and Fapy Lafertin but also with many other great musicians in many genres, he's very underrated and despite his incredible musical genius not very well known outside of Belgium. He is one of my greatest inspirations and was always a childhood hero of mine, I was lucky enough to be able to share the stage so much with this incredible musician.

Finding these recordings again made me so happy and I'm glad I filmed these when I had the chance and captured a little fragment of the genius musicality that Rony possesed.

The repertoire my grandfather selected for this trio consists of some very beautiful and often obscure songs, Fapy's playing is excellent and it's heartwarming to see how much these three friends enjoyed sharing the stage and playing music together, it's not gypsy jazz necessarily but I think some of you will enjoy it nonetheless!

What a great first post! Welcome, Djalt. And dank u well for sharing the music of your grand father (and friends :-) ) with us! I remember seeing him play with Lollo Meier in Hoensbroek over 20 years ago!

Thank you for sharing this, it's really wonderful. I don't even know why but as soon as I saw Koen De Cauter, I thought of Tu Djaial. And sure enough it was there.

As it happens, just this week I had been organizing and digitizing my recordings by Koen de Cauter, who is certainly one of the most interesting musicians around in any style. From being a founder of Waso, to recordings of Brassens tunes with Patrick Saussois, solo recordings of Flemish poet Guido Gezelle's poetry set to music, with Les P'tits Belges, and many more, his guitar and saxophone playing is always tasteful and elegant, and he always puts the song first. Francois Ravez RIP and I used to always talk about how much we liked the versions of Brassens songs he did with Saussois, which he sings in French with a thick Flemish accent - these recordings are really charming and the playing is perfect - like this video! The CD is Un P'tit Coin d'Paradis.

It is cool to think these guys have been playing together the majority of their lives.

Thank you for the kind welcome! I'm glad to hear that the recordings are appreciated; I'll upload some more soon! I didn't know that my Grandfather ever played with Lollo Meier! I'm twenty years old so I missed my Grandfather's golden days but I'm glad that I still get to play together with him a lot! I've got a video of a reunion concert of Romani where I also play, I'll try to upload it tomorrow!

Thank you for the kind words! That's a great coincidence! I love that song and always enjoy it when my Grandfather sings it.

Yeah, they've been playing together since they were both 14 years old (their age difference is two days!) Here's a picture of Fapy and my Grandfather in their early twenties.

Unique instance of Fapy on a classical guitar and my Grandfather on a beautiful old Marius guitar that sadly got lost in a house fire.

Un P'tit Coin de Paradis is a nice cd! I'm really amazed that you know of the Gezelle projects and Les P'tits Belges, glad to see those projects of my Grandfather being appreciated as well!

Together with my Uncle Myrddin, he made a new album with musical arrangements of poems of Gezelle. It's mostly contemporary flamenco arranged for violin, cello, horn and double bass but there's also one that's more gypsy swing-like where my Dad plays rhythm guitar and I play lead guitar.

Yeah, don't be surprised about people knowing some of these projects. If there is a corner of the internet that apprecites WASO or Fapy or Koen, etc, it is here! Love that old Marius guitar. There was an old one for sale on this thread below, but it seems the pictures are gone. It had that same "bat" shaped hole in the headstock. The guy at the bottom of this thread, Tony Walker, used to run JWC guitars in the UK. I'm pretty sure he bought the guitar that would have been in those pictures and he and Jeong-Woo used the dimensions, etc to make a replica of it. So you could always spring for a newer version if the spirit moved you.

    JWC Marius replica.
