Hi Ed

I don't know where you are in you violin studies, but first you gotta be able to play the instrument. No disrespect intended but the things that Steph and Django played are not for the faint of heart.

Listen to as much as you can. Some of the original swing violinists I admire include Joe Venuti, Stuff Smith, Claude Williams and Stephane Grapelli. Today Julie Lyonn Lieberman, John Blake and Randy Sabien are some players carrying on that tradition.

Books that I have found helpful include:

Jazz Fiddle Wizard, Martin Norgard
Improvising Violin, Julie Lyonn Lieberman
Jazz Improvisation Made Easy, John Blake

I am new to the guitar myself but I hope these ideas will be helpful.
