Interesting that, as jazz musicians, we modify the melody (and even abandon it) constantly, but apart from "chord substitutions" we don't feel that we can modify the harmony -- i.e., the basic underlying chords. (We take those as given.) E.g., what if you like C6 better than Cm6?

Me too. (Though I've always played major 6!)
It doesn't really matter, it moves so fast. Either will work. Bass line is what gives it meaning.
Okay, what are the chords to this off-the-wall intro to Hungaria by Bireli some years back (at 4:40)?

He just plays shell chords
Exactly => G, D7/A, G/B, C-, G/B, D7/A, G, D7 (double D => x50xxx)
G = 3x24xx
D7/A = 5x45xx
G/B = 7x57xx
C- = 8x78xx
and back to end on...
D7 = x50xxx
Went back and listened and I have been playing it incorrectly... it is C-6

Whoa. I’ve played that as C6 for probably 20 years. Embarrassing.
I am hearing both ways depending on who's doing it. Certainly easier to play as the minor but I think that either is good.
Absolutely hear the E on the C6 here.
We are such nerds!
