Thanks that is a great version...so a question about the correct chord to play in the B section. The iReal chart shows Bb7#11, but watching Denis looks like he's playing Gm7//// C7////. Any thoughts on this? Cheers Phil
Different people play different things there. If I were you, I'd choose the option that sounded better to my ears and personal harmonic preferences. After all, that's part of the fun of being a musician...you actually get to decide the way you want to do it!
It works because Gm is the relative minor of Bb (Gm has the same notes as Bb6) and a 251 is a natural substitution. The real book has the chord as Bb9 so the sharp 11 is optional. The melody suggests the Bb but a 251 is a bit easier for solos and has a bit more movement. The main problem with the 251 is that it sounds too similar to the A section. Denis has the advantage of being the only rhythm player - you wouldn’t want everyone playing different chords!
While I was checking Adrien's version that @adrian linked above, the youtube algorithm served me up this version by Bireli, though it is a bit more straightforward jazz in style.

Yes, there's a great version on Adrien Moignard's album "All The Way."

Thanks Lucky...that makes sense. It didn't immediately jump out at me what with the b7#11 being a distraction.
