The Dillards, at The Ash Grove in the L.A. area, around 1969.
Mountain/Leslie West and Skynyrd 1970, minor league ballpark, Jax, Fl. I think. Might have been ABB at the Orlando Sport Stadium around the same time. I did not think it would be so difficult to remember this accurately.
Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. Before they got real Big. And then Carlos Santana. Both of them in Montreal.
Frank Zappa and the Mothers, Madison Wi around 1970. Soon after this BB King
Dream Theater and Joe Satriani in the early '00s
When I was 10, my my dad bought my first guitar for me. It was a $10 Silvertone from Sears. I immediately took it up, to inspire me, my dad drove my sister and me to downtown Los Angeles, dropped us off at a concert hall which I can't remember the name, but it was where the Philharmonic performed. That night we saw Andres Segovia. Unforgettable!
I think a lot of people might consider changing their bank security questions after reading this thread! ha ha😂
My first concert was around 9yo when my Dad got sick for a rock band he and my mom were going to see. So my mom took me instead. I remember it being very loud!
But in early '89 Metallica was on their Damaged Justice tour and really starting to gather steam. They announced the tour dates including a date in Milwaukee (1.5 hr drive) and we wanted to go, but I was ~13 and my brother was 12. My mom thought it was probably too mature for our age so said no despite our pleadings. However, she claimed it was "too far away" as the excuse, rather than her discomfort for the music and its scene. So we said, if they ever come to Green Bay (~50mins-much smaller city), will you promise to let us go? She figured they'd already announced the tour dates for this album so it wouldn't be for another year or more and acquiesced. As I said, I think the managers of Metallica started to see the strong interest for their music in the Midwest as early ticket sales were strong and so several weeks later, they announced 2 or 3 more dates across WI, including Green Bay. She was true to her word and dropped us off at the Brown County Arena and told us she'd meet us up the street at a donut shop parking lot ~30 mins after the show was supposed to end. It was a great memory for both my brother and me. Also built a lot of trust between parent and children.
Therapy? / Poitiers / 1994...
Peter Paul and Mary (too young to remember really, so call it 4/5?), Then Charlie Byrd trio (at the king's tavern in Annapolis) and at Blues Alley. I used to see Charlie with some regularity from age 7-8 until college. Lots and lots of jazz and folk until high school (of special memory - Ella her quartet at the Kennedy Center; Sonny Rollins At Wolf trap, Danny Gatton at Twins) . Then I found rock music and punk . . .
Lol.
@billyshakes Bill, that's a great anecdote and so awesome you got to see Metallica with Cliff to boot!!
