Found this on Youtube yesterday. Pretty cool stuff.

P.S.: If you like this slide guitar/Selmer combination, check out the Doudou Swing CD. It features an electric lap steel on a track or two. Michael probably has this CD in his shop.

Wow man that was Cool. This is really interesting. I have been playing some country style electric telecaster stuff with some friends of mine in kind of hankIII, Junior Brown, New Old School Honky Tonk(I made that last one up!) I and I have been trying to talk the pedal steel playing buddy of mine into soing some similair kind of stuff although electric. I will have to show him that. Any more recomendations??????

It's Dobro, not pedal steel, but I highly recommend Rob Ickes on Three Ring Circle.

If you want some hot swinging steel guitar I heartily recommend Curley Chalker on "S'Wonderful: Four Giants of Swing" with Joe Venuit, Eldon Shamblin, and Jethro Burns.

I think that guy is an amateur.

I see that Mike Neer is playing with the Moonlighters. One or two of you folks might be interested to hear that their former slide guitarist was Henry Bogdan, formerly of Helmet. Yes, the mid-'90s super heavy stop-start FBLA-playing hardcore/metal band.

Rod, you're bringing me back to my college years, man...I had a crazy roommate who was SO into Helmet it was scary. Though I bet if you scratched the surface of most of today's thirtysomething hotclub players, you'd find some similar things...I played for a while in a kind of Clash/dub band. Thankfully no recordings survive...

    Best,
    Jack.

Other then Django Bob Brozman is one of my favorites. I really like his view on guitar playing, music and life in general. If you have not seen it go to google videos and put in "Slide Guitar" and on about the second page there is one call The Guitar Show with Bob Brozman. His version of Down the Road is great.

    Cheers,
    Josh

More great tricone players of the 1920's and 30's:

    King Bennie Newahi
    Sol Hoopii
    Casey Bill Weldon
    Cliff Carlisle
    Black Ace
    Frank Ferrara

There is also the group Les Loups which was Oscar Aleman backing a steel player.

Western Swing is full of great amplified lap steel players. Bob Dunn is the pioneer, and probably my favorite. Any western swing comp will be filled with Bob Dunn imitators.

Not tricone, but the best steel player I've ever heard is Jeremy Wakefield. Check out on cdbaby for his CD "Steel Guitar Caviar", or just search for him on youtube. JW has played with Big Sandy, Dave Biller and Hot Club of Cowtown, and is currently in two bands - the Lucky Stars (the best current western swing band I've ever heard) and the Bonebreak Syncopators. The Syncopators have a really interesting frontline - steel, electric guitar and vibes. They play tunes by the Benny Goodman sextet, Django and some proto-bop. Its like Joaquin Murphey sitting in with Red Norvo and Barney Kessel in 1946. Rad.

One of my bandmates saw the Lucky Stars open for Fantomas here in L.A. If you're not familiar with Fantomas, they're comprised of members of the Melvins, Slayer, and Mr. Bungle. Apparently, all the prog/metalheads at the show loved the Stars. Just goes to show you...something or other.

JW also contributes to the score for the Spongebob Squarepants cartoon series.

And again returning to the heavier side of things, the leader and vibes player for the Bonebrake Syncopators is none other than DJ Bonebrake, the former drummer of X.

Bonebrake also played on Steven Bernstein's excellent Diaspora Hollywood album, which was recorded by Woody Jackson. Jackson used to guitar play in a loungey band called the Useless Playboys and has since developed an amazing sound using a guitorgan and an Echoplex.

And Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra finally has a CD out, with some excellent violin work by James Blood Ulmer compatriot Charlie Burnham and guitar from Doug Wamble and Matt Munisteri. It's loose and fun, roughly taking the style of a 1930's Kansas City band and using it to interpret classing swing tunes and modern songs (like "Cry Baby Cry" and "Darling Nikki").

    Okay, I think I'm finished.

    Phew.

Hey guys thanks for the info guys Rod as before you have hipped me to some cool bands. I am really into the Biller Wakefield, Bryant West thing. but thats me. Not to worry guys I am still playing a bunch of Gypsy Jazz and Jazz. This country band thing is just between me and some friends so that we can play shows and act the damn fool. I am almost done with the school thing so I am finally going to be able to focus on music I like so I am going to swing swing swing.
