simple homemade bass for doodling around

I made a simple homemade upright bass for my son to try to play bass lines with me on violin. I was amazed at how bass-like the sound is, although it's quite a bit softer than the real thing.

The instructions are at:
http://www.ehhs.cmich.edu/~dhavlena/doodle-b.htm

I only deviated from the instructions for Version #2 by using ukulele tuners and a wooden nut instead of tacks.

As the author of the instructions says, the construction is quick and easy (can be done in an evening if you have all the stuff) and it's not fussy at all. I have practically zero woodworking skills and it still works great.

Here are a few pictures and a sound file. The sound file is lousy as I only have a cheap laptop and microphone, but maybe it will give you an idea.

Cool...Make a few with "aged" 40 year cookie tins, call it the Doodle Base Vieille Reserve, and sell it for $7K a pop!
