My advice would be to get an early 40's EH-185 or 150. By 1940, they were essentially the same amp in different cabinets. The design changed a bit, and the last ones made sound the best in my opinion. Also check out the BR-1. It's the most underrated amp out there. Like an EH-185 with more balls.
It looks like a fella named Whit in Tulsa is selling a eh-185 on ebay. Looks like it has been made road worthy and had an interesting owner. Might by a good amp for someone looking for that kind of tone. EH-185 Link
shudduuuup.....shhhhh, no one is supposed to know about that auction..... Who am I kidding, my 185 should be arriving tomorrow or monday, and plus there's a great 150 I just found at a local music store.....wait....I said nothing.......
My 185 arrived on Saturday morning, but I've only managed to get about 15 minutes of playtime on it. I can say for sure the thing is FAT. I can't wait to see what its like cranked a bit more and I can use it live. I'm pissed because I should have waited for Whit's, because it went for less than I paid, and I don't think I would have to go over his once I got it. Oh well.
I actually had gotten a chance to play on a nice 150 for half and hour the day before my 185 arrived, and they were pretty similar, but the 185 was just a little "bigger." I need to play it some more to really get a handle on it.
Oh and my 185 is one of the rare transitional models that is label as a 150. I guess Gibson was going to replace the 150 with the amp that became the 185, but instead decided to continue making the 150 and just give the new design a different model number. Anyway a few early 185's were labeled as 150's. Odd, but true.
I think one of Whit's was one of the early 185's too, i.e. with two tone knobs, treble and bass, instead of just a single tone knob. His website has a pic, and something about having one too many tone knobs.
