Original Django records?..

Hi, All!

Please, tell me, what "original" Django records are? So, if speak about recordings of 30th - it should be 78 RPM "acrill"? Then, "Extenden Play" 45 RPM records are more later presses?

Correct. 33 1/3 RPM records were not invented until 1948. 45 RPM records were not invented until 1949. The bulk of Django's recorded material was released on 78 RPM discs. He did some record some sessions in the late 1940s and early 1950s, so it's possible that these were released on 45 or 33 1/3 RPM records. Scot or Teddy might be able to answer this question more definitively.

Almost all Django's 1930 recordings were first issued on 78's. There are a few exceptions like the two versions of "Chinatown" from 1935 which have only ever been officially issued on CD.

During the 40s, an increasing number were not officially released at the time of recording and first appeared later on EPs or LPs. It becomes more complex in the late 40's and 50's where some from a recording session would be regularly released on 78 but the rest not appear until later on various extended play recordings. 10" LPs were quite popular for a while in the 50s before 12" became the norm.
