I asked this on the Yahoo forums but I thought I'd give it a whirl here. I'm preparing to apply to some graduate programs for music. I'm worried that a traditional jazz program will force me to play progressive/post-bop and not allow me to explore or develop my gypsy jazz playing. What do you guys think is a field of study that would complement a gypsy jazz player? I'm looking currently at the contemporary improvisation program the New England Conservatory offers. I'm not sure what kind of chance one has of getting accepted to a program like that though. I've also considered pursuing musicology or ethnomusicology, however, I've already tried that route at FSU and they said I needed more of a "musicology" background; my undergtraduate work was in music performance.
