In my experience with flattops with solid back and sides, I find that koa sounds like something between mahagony (bright) and Indian rosewood (darker and more tonally complex). If you're getting a sel/mac with laminated back and sides, I believe the exterior wood doesn't affect tone (only appearance).

thanks, that really helps. I like the dark side of the rosewood... never thought of it as complex.
