I am practicing the heck out of picking pattern #3, diminished sweep, I really love when gypsy players just throw this in to there solos, but I am having trouble fitting this in to my solos, are they're any rules as to when to use this, how you decide which fret to start it on? can you use this effectively on only minor tunes?
thanks for any advice

1) As an Dominant b9 chord
Example 3.1 in the book shows you how to use it over A7. Doesn't matter which inversion you start on, just as long as it's the right diminished arp (Bb C# E G).
2) As a Minor 6 b5 chord
Example 3.1 also shows how to use diminished to get a D minor 6 b5 sound. Again, any inversion will work. Just makes sure you have the right notes (D F Ab .
Good luck!
