Are the unwound gypsy type strings any different

than the standard in sound and what?

    Apparently, they are plain steel, just like regular guitar strings. If you need to buy they singly, just make sure you get the correct gauge. If you need loop ends, Michael sells them right here.

    I don't think there's a real difference, though I like the look of the loop end more and it seems to make more smooth/uniform contact with the tailpiece than the ball-end. Whether that means anything is beyond me.
