OK Larry, looks like I might even beat you to the punch. I brought my guitar into the shop today to get the Schatten pickup installed and there, to my surprise, was a Shertler David amp. So tomorrow when I pick up my axe, I'll be able to test it through the David. I'd still be interested in what you think about the Compact 60 with the Schatten though.
Great! Now you can tell ME how the Schatten sounds through the David.
As far as the Schatten (w/Gallato) through the AER Compact 60, I really like the sound of it, but it 's VERY bright, and I have to boost the bass & mids more than I would like to get a "fuller" sound. I also have to turn up the volume quite a bit louder than with a Bigtone. Weaker pickup? Improper installation? I really don't know. I do like the sound of the Schatten, though. Very natural. I'm pretty sure the brightness is just a characteristic of the Gallato, not the pickup.
Please let us know how the Schatten works out for you, and how it sounds through the David. BTW, what guitar are you installing the Schatten in? Thanks!
Larry, to answer your last question first, I'm playing a Gitane DG-250M, now with the Schatten pickup. I picked up my guitar today and immediately plugged it into the Shertler David (via Baggs preamp). I was really impressed by both the pickup and the amp. I tried a similar Gitane with Schatten pickup recently with the Roland AC-60 (same Baggs pre)and liked it, but the David was much much warmer and acoustic sounding. It had a more full sound spectrum.
You're right about the output of this pickup - it's on the low side and was pretty much made to be used with a preamp. I'd love to hear their "artist" model with the built-in preamp throught the Compact 60, but I opted for the passive model since I like having the extra control a good preamp gives you.
The other guitarist in my band happend to pick up a Compact 60 today, so I played through it tonight at our rehearsal. To me it sounded like an even better match than the David with the Schatten pickup, though the difference may have been in part attributable to the room. It sounded so much like my guitar that I doubt if a mic could have done much better. Seems like the Shertler is tweaked for the DYN pickups, so I'm not surprised that it sounded so much better for you, but for we Schatten folk, the C60 might be the amp of choice.
Anyway, my first gig with the Schatten is tomorrow night, so I'll probably start a new thread with a review of it soon.
How do the Schertler amps sound with other pickups? Bigtone, etc. How does the loudness of the AER 60 watt compare to the David?
The AER should be a little quieter, as the David rates at 80 watts. I thought the David sounded great with the Schatten pickup, but the AER got the edge, sounding a little better. But that David was built for the Shertler pickups, so it probably sounds best with those.
