csardas

Hi, all.

I've just met an amazing violinist who plays Csardas de Monti in her sleep; trouble is, I can't play it awake. I wonder if anyone's got some tips for backing up a soloist on these kind of tunes, which seem to fall just outside the usual GJ repertoire. It'd be nice if we could call one at a jam someday. Any help's appreciated.

Thanks,
Jack.

I forgot to mention: the one we were listening to is from Gypsy Guitars. And if anyone's interested, you can find a transcription of another version here: http://jazz.chansons.free.fr/guitarejazz2.htm

you should learn to do the hungarian style of accompaniment for guitar (although the guitar is usually replaced by the cymbalom)... lots of sinti guitarists use it as well (and combine it with variations on the pompe)...

it's hard to explain , but the most basic thing to it is down on 1st + 3rd beat.... up on 2nd and 4th beats...

so alternating between down (boom) and up (tchak)....

i think you see jimmy rosenberg doing it on the frank vignola dvd... he alternates between hungarian style and sinti style.... his choice of voicings at one point is very very very very poor (Dm chord with F# in the bas!!)

Thanks, Dennis. I don't have that Vignola DVD, but I've got some of the 'hotel room' footage with Jimmy and Frederico playing it-same thing? I'm guessing it must be, because I was watching it last night, and remember thinking "What the hell is that?!?" at one point.

    Best,
    Jack.

I just replied to this at the other forum, i have a chart, pm me your email address and i will send it. I play with a fiddle player and worked a chart out to play this with her, you might have to tweak it to work with your fiddler but the basics are there.

If it's okay with Inb, I can just post the chords once I've got the chart...I'm sure someone else could use them too.
