changing the nut on a Gitane D-500

Hi there,
I want to change the distance between strings on a D-500, so I must replace the nut.
Any trick to remove the nut safely ? (I ask before any attempt...)
Thanks

    Elliot :
interesting web page, thanks, but doesn't apply to the D-500 nut, another beast entirely.
    Thanks anyway

It is my oppinion that if this is something you have never done or have to ask about, it is something better left to a professional luthier. Changing a nut is harder than it looks to do right and it took me doing a few before I got comfortable doing it. Thats my oppinion though. What is it about the nut you are unhappy with?

Heat it up with a soldering iron to loosen the glue, and then tap it out from the end with something that's the width of the saddle--like a blunt screw driver and hammer.
