Dell Arte...CA fires

Just had a short email exchange with Alain C. and he said that he and John were being impacted by the fires. John K. apparently lost his condo and the Dell Arte shop may burn.
Hopefully the winds will turn favorably before any further destruction.

Maybe this community can start to think about some short of benefit to resurrect one of the genres biggest contributors over the last decade.

And for those who pray, send some that way!

    I for one will.

I have had my Dell'Arte for almost 2 years now and could not be happier and certainly would look to John and Alan if I were in the market for a new instrument. My thoughts and prayers are with Alan and John and all at Dell'Arte.

Wow....I was wondering if they were in danger. This is really terrible...even more so that it appears arsonists set some of these fires.

I'll give Alain a call and see if I can get more info....

    From Alain:

The fires are creating havoc here. We have been evacuated Monday and allowed back this morning. John Kinnard lost his house, burned to the ground, the Dell’Arte shop is not out of danger yet, the fire is less than a mile from it.

I have to keep a Zen attitude and the show must go on!

If there was arson involved, that would be terrible.

But when you look at the big picture (evidently at some risk around here!) you'll find that most of the responsibility lies with the Parks Dept and their long standing policy of putting out smaller fires immediately and not letting them burn out on their own whenever possible. This has only created the effect, building over decades, of making SoCal into a gigantic tinderbox, leading to the kind of blazes we are seeing now. The tragedy is that like Katrina it was predictable, and Conservationists have been warning everyone about it for years.

Responsibility aside, there's talk on some of the boards of putting together a benefit for friends in the community...I've volunteered for anything in the Northeast, and I hope the idea will spread to other regions. Alain has been a great ambassador for gypsy jazz, and should harm come to the Dell Arte shop I'd be glad to know we all pitched in to help out some fellow musicians.

Something similar was put together after Katrina hit, and for the good it does it seems like giving up a night's pay is small potatoes...updates to come!

    best,
    Jack.

I wish Alain and Dell'Arte all the best. Alain has always been a huge supporter and promoter in bringing the best Gypsy Jazz artists to these shores. His presence was missed at this year's DFNW.

Regarding any benefit or fund raising event: we should first confim that they do not have insurance that would cover such an occurence. I have heard that some insurance companies no longer provide fire insurance, I hope that is not the case in this instance. ~ Cheers, Phil

    Hi guys,
I would be in for any benefit for them in the NE as well- I have a very special dell arte that I love; its an amazing guitar, and alain has always been amazing to me when I needed things- I think we should do one anyway- they have put a lot into this music; and even if we can cover incidental costs that would be great.

    Here's the latest:

Yes, the fire situation is getting better. The shop is fine, I just talked to John, he was there. According to him as far as Tuesday morning his condo was still up even thought many others had burned. He hasn’t been able to go back since. The TV news reported that the entire complex had burned down but one of his neighbors contradicts this. We’ll know more over the weekend.
