well i m endorsed by AJL guitars so I might be biased, but I really like working with him because he has a professional attitude, does not bullshit and will promptly reply by email or phone. Plus it comes with the coolest guitar case known to man...
my current AJL (model 503) has a vintage finish, you can hear it here:
I have a Jazz Model coming in a week or two. I have been second guessing myself, as to whether I should have ordered a 503 instead, especially after talking to Andreas Oberg at DFNW, but I'm sure I'll be quite happy. I have only played a Jazz Model and loved it.....
To insist on Michael's advice, I would also recommend Shelley Park's guitars.
It is obvious to say that all the luthiers mentioned before are excellent.
Shelley Park's guitars have a very thin neck, they are very comfortable to play, and they're really beautifully built. They have a truss rod, and frets, neck and tuners are just perfect. The finish is probably not better than any of these great guitars mentioned before, but be sure it is as good and that your guitar will be wonderful.
The sound is typical gypsy, bright, but maybe not as crisp as AJL's or Duponts' which doesn't make the sound weaker or louder, but just the tone a little more mellow. I am sure Craig would aggree !
Try to find a couple of songs played by Pearl Django, she was member of them but gave it up to only build guitars. So you'll get an idea of the sound I am talking about.
I don't think Park's guitar won't loose in value, there are just so few guitars makers on this continent ! Take a look at her website, and call her you'll have a better feedback http://www.parkguitars.com/
Anyway, just to focus on these guitars as well ! But be sure that with all the makers we've talked about you won't make a mistake !
Does anybody know what guitar Bireli plays on the DVD "Bireli Lagrene and friends: Jazz a Vienne 2002" (which by the way is an amazing dvd)?
One great thing about the dvd is the bonus in studio. He plays this incredible guitar with an amazing sound and I was wondering if anybody knew the specifications of this guitar (Wood, guitar maker, pickup,...).
I know that he now endorses Hahl, but I do not think it was a Hahl on the dvd..
Thanks
