"Seattle Jazz Guitar Society"
Starting the 2008 SJGS "clinic season" is Swedish guitarist Andreas Oberg on Saturday 05 January 1-3pm @ the Mercer Island Community Center.
Andreas' playing spans the multiple styles and genres of this music we call Jazz, and on the first week of the new year he will be at Jazz Alley joining our friends Pearl Django (make your reservations now as they tend to sell out the room).
For the January clinic, Andreas will discuss his views on approaching a familiar tune or segment but applying the different rhythmic, harmonic and melodic concepts of mainstream jazz, modern jazz and gypsy swing. In other words, what is similar and what is different? Comping vs. soloing? Can these alternate stylistic concepts co-exist on stage simultaneously?
SJGS Jammers who attend the regular monthly Hopvine sessions will find practical applications to this clinic. When a Django-ist and a Modern-ist sit together on stage, Andreas will help give players a sense of how the other might approach the same material and what each might do to complement the other while maintaining one's individual identity.
