After a few weeks of lurking on these boards, I figured it's time to say "Howdy!" and chime in with a few words.
When I viewed Bireli's "Jazz a' Vienne" DVD (oh how many times?) I thought Dutronc seemed serviceable enough as a player. When I Googled him for his background, I was immediately presented with images and history of his father. I thought , "My G-d, I didn't know they'd perfected human cloning in the 1960s!" To say Thomas is the 'apple that didn't fall to far from the tree' is to be guilty of understatement. And, yeah his mom's a babe.
I think Thomas' CD is a pleasant blend of styles. If you search for examples of his parent's work, you'll DEFINITELY hear their influence on the younger Dutronc's disk. Sure, I wish it had more GJ, but I applaud his efforts. It has variety, a touch of humor and is a nice diversion from the 11,000th rendition of "Minor Swing." (As someone else has alluded to.)
As to WowBobWow's comment: "it's too bad there aren't jazz shows like that on US tv."
Yeah, jazz has been a marginalized genre in the U.S. for a long time. I'm always thrilled when I travel to find radio stations that specialize in it (WBGO, WNSC in the East , KCSM in the West) It's a shame the rest of the world loves "our" music better than "we" do! Fortunately, we have Internet "radio." Of course, one could pay for satellite....
But a jazz TV network? What are those chords again to "Dream"...?

I've often thought bands might have a shot at getting on Conan O'Brien; he's apparently a real guitar nut...
